Investing in a private home is one of the ways to build wealth and pass it along to the next generation. In several Black communities in Brooklyn, that process has faltered in the face of numerous challenges. Grow Brooklyn’s executive director Samira Rajan spoke with Patricia Swann, The Trust’s senior program officer for civic affairs, community development, and technical assistance, about how Grow Brooklyn helps Black families hold on to the wealth they have accumulated in their homes. What follows are excerpts from that conversation:
Rajan describes how Black New Yorkers in several neighborhoods are seeing the disintegration of their family’s intergenerational wealth.
Though systemic problems are a barrier, Rajan explains that Grow Brooklyn also helps families be proactive.
Rajan talks about how the pandemic has changed the legal landscape for the communities she serves.
The safest way for families to protect the intergenerational passing of wealth is to take the time to plan.
This fall, The Trust spoke with experts about contemporary issues in philanthropy. These interactive briefings give our donors an opportunity to think about their philanthropic legacy and how to align it with their personal vision and values.
