With his Long Island baking legacy, Entenmann gave back to his community.
Charles E. Entenmann (1929-2022)
On February 24, 2022, The New York Community Trust – Long Island lost a dear friend and renowned Long Island philanthropist, Charles E. Entenmann. He was 92.
While he and his family were known for the famed Long Island bakery that became one of the nation’s best-known producers of baked goods, Charlie, his two brothers, and the entire family were truly altruistic as they granted millions of dollars to Long Island nonprofits but did most of it anonymously. And the family never forgot the hometown of the famed bakery and focused on additional grants in this community including hundreds of college scholarships to Bay Shore High School graduates.
“We are thankful to have known and worked with Charlie on many important community projects, specifically in his beloved town of Bay Shore,” says David M. Okorn, vice president. “His desire to help the community he loved and his sense of responsibility for those in need, was and will be an inspiration to many for decades to come. His legacy will live on through The Trust and we will miss him dearly.”
He is survived by his son, Charles; daughter, Susan; seven grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. His wife, Nancy (Drake) Entenmann, died in 2014. A daughter, Barbara Thompson, died in 2018. His brother William died in 2011, his brother Robert in 2016.
