This September, over a million students across the city will enter classrooms to learn, interact with their peers, and gain critical thinking skills to help them navigate an increasingly complex world. Receiving a high-quality education can transform a student’s life.
By giving to these nonprofits, you can help our region improve equitable access to quality education, invest in strong student and teacher support systems, and create pathways to higher education throughout New York.
Preventing Discrimination in the Classroom
Advocates for Children of New York protects every child’s right to learn, focusing on students from low-income backgrounds who are struggling in school or experiencing school discrimination of any kind, including suspensions, inappropriate class placement, and denial of necessary services.
Education Trust-New York is a statewide education policy and advocacy organization that uses research and data analysis, as well as community input, to develop policy recommendations to encourage more equitable opportunities for New York’s public school students.
Supporting Students and Teachers
Literacy Academy Collective works to break the cycle of illiteracy for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities, as well as other struggling readers. The nonprofit designs evidence-based, culturally relevant literacy instruction, which it brings into New York City public school classrooms.
Teaching Lab provides professional development and coaching for educators to improve instruction for underserved students. It supports more than 50 school systems across 20 states, reaching 17,000 educators. Increasing Access to Higher Education

It uses a comprehensive college and career success curriculum to work with hundreds of schools and youth development groups nationwide.

The non–profit provides scholarships to New York City students who are the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree, and offers them paid summer internships, mental health services, and access to professional networking opportunities.
WESTCHESTER: Lifting Up Westchester serves young people experiencing homelessness and poverty by providing extra academic enrichment and support for students to master key skills, stay focused on academic success, graduate high school, and develop college and career plans.
